Rhode Island
" Going Mobile"
The Rhode Island experience will be one to remember for a long time. This is Dave's home town and our first show ever in this state. We have been waiting for this opportunity to perform in front of some new faces for a while now. I knew there would be added pressure on Dave, although you would never have known it.
The road trip up was fueled with Dunkin' Donuts coffee, Live "WHO" and "Oasis" and McDonalds cheeseburgers. Traveling with me was Debby, our band photographer, and Brian T, our acting road manager. Dom and Bobby traveled together with the rental van a few miles ahead. The rest of the crew flew up earlier that day, Jim the video tech, and Craig our keyboard player. We got to the hotel around 2:00 P.M and rested for a couple of hours before our 5:00 sound check.
The sound check was a scene right out of Spinal Tap. That night we were booked with another tribute band " Diver Down " ( Van Halen ) and there seemed to be a miss communication on how we would change sets between acts. At one point there was 20 guitars on stage, Marshall stacks, Hiwatt stacks, keyboards, Bass amps, drums scattered all over the place, and a sound man screaming at everyone. We finally figured out a way to set up a Van Halen show and a Who show on one stage.
We took the stage around 9:35 and played non stop to 11:10. I would have to say this was one of our best performances ever. The sound was amazing and the stage mix was perfect. We played this show in true "Who" form, fire, passion and attitude. I remember the second song in during Anyway Anyhow, cutting my finger on a miss hit windmill. After that holding on to guitar picks became a chore. Many songs stood out that night, Bobby's drumming stunned the crowd along with Dave's vocals on "Love Reign" , Craig's keyboard work on "Who Are You" and Dom's bass solo on 5:15. Three of my guitars went down that night, one to a broken "A" string, another to a broken guitar strap lock, and the last from being smashed down and bounced off stage. Thanks to Debby for these great photos from the show. These pictures really capture the show. Thanks to Brian, who made sure all was well at every moment. Danny, Joyce, Jim ( Bucket Head ) and all the people of Rhode Island for there incredible support. We will see you again in the fall.
